Racism with Different Seasonings
Scope and Contents
‘Racism with different seasonings’...
Being a black woman who’s lived and travelled through different cultures, it’s fair to say I have experienced racism with all its flavours and seasonings (at least those I can think of).
The in-your-face racism that I grew accustomed to... growing up in the Middle East
The trickier It’s-all-in-your-head racism that I am still trying to get adjusted to here in Canada....
And the curious case of Colorism among the black community...
Experiencing all these different seasonings of racism, chipped a little part of me away over the years, but yet I believe made me stronger and added an additional layer of resilience in me. I’d like to think this layer of resilience is built-in in black people.
I want to share some of my experience with all these ‘different seasonings’ over the coming few days.
Though when it comes to racism as a form of discrimination ... how do I separate being discriminated against as a black person, from being discriminated against as an immigrant, as a woman, as a black-skinned person in the black community or in my own Black Country?
I don’t have answers.
