Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

This subseries includes typescripts and articles written by or attributed to Senator Tower and interviews that were published in national and Texas magazines, newspapers, and special interest publications. Occasionally correspondence accompanies the materials, and a few typescripts have editorial revisions, usually minor. A number of the publications are for conservative publication, such as New Guard, Forewarned, Battle Line, The Conservative Tide or for trade publications representing such industries as fishing, oil and gas. Senator Tower frequently expressed his conservative opinions in such articles as "Conservatism Unashamed," "Some Insight into the Conservative Mentality," "ABC's of Conservatism," and "American Conservatism Defined," all from 1963. Other writings reflect events of the times, such as a 1968 special to the North American Newspaper Alliance about Vietnam, a 1970 article about wage and price controls, and articles from the 1970s concerned with energy, inflation, Watergate, and unionization of the military. Writings from the 1980s tend to focus on defense issues, such as the Spring 1982 article in Washington Quarterly, "Modernizing the U.S. Chemical Deterrents: The Politics of Preparedness." Also included are some columns from the bulletin of the Republican Congressional Boosters Club and a few speeches that were revised for publication.
