O. W. Cardwell Correspondence, July 14, Aug. 1928
Scope and Contents
Cover letter to Dean Ullrich asking him to circulate the July 14th letter to the Executive Committee; the July 14th letter (concerns moral laxity, the necessity of reinstating rules for the student body and chaperones for women and dating couples. According to SU Alumna Nell Benold who had a copy of this letter, Cardwell was a well-to-do Junction, TX, rancher. He had only one arm but still played polo. When the Methodist Church allowed a square dance, he was furious. He sent his daugther to be educated at a strict Catholic school in San Antonio. He writes: 'I say to you, run boys and girls loose on the hills like animals on an unfenced range and you will get the same prmiscuous results. No successful ranchman would think of such a thing with his goats or sheep or cattle.' He goes on to condemn Southwestern for allowing too much freedom to women.
