Johnson Family Papers
Abstract
Folder one contains a collection of essays, poems, and other writings from the Johnson Institute from the years 1867 through 1882. While majority of the materials in this collection are students' work, there are a few pieces that appear to be from a teacher. Such as a farewell speech and a list of students names (and nicknames). Folder two contains an assortment of various pieces of correspondeces and notes from the Johnson family without dates. The Johnson family ran a school starting in the 1850s north of San Marcos. Folder three contains correspondences between members of the Johnson family between the years 1838 and 1869. Letters from Della Johnson and Martha White are predominate. Folder four contains correspondences between members of the Johnson family between 1871 and 1888. A predominate reciepent was Martha White and a predominate writer was Della Johnson to her husband. Folder five contains correspondences between Johnson family members between the years 1891 and 1929. In addition to written letters there are invitations, calling messages, and a deed of sale.

Biographical / Historical
The Johnson Family, originally from Missouri, came to Texas in 1844, moving several times before finally settling in Hays County. Thomas Johnson and his wife, Catherine Johnson, had six children. Thomas Johnson, a schoolmaster, established the Johnson Institute in 1852, thirty miles north of San Marcos. The Johnson Institute was a private secondary school with a coeducational student body. Three of the Johnson children would later teach there.

Arranged in five legal archival folders. Folders 1-4 house correspondence starting with undated aned ending with 1929. Folder 2 has school papers ranging between the years 1867 to 1882, with the first portion being an assortment of undated materials.
